ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Gloriosa is a native of tropical Asia and Africa. The genus derives its name from the Latin word gloriosus, referring to the flowers. It is found growing throughout tropical India, from the North-west Himalayas to Assam and Deccan peninsula, extending upto an elevation of 2,120m.In Karnataka, it is commonly found growing all along the Western Ghats. It is found growing in Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Indochina and on the adjacent islands. The area under this crop in India is around 2,000 ha.

 

 

 

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES AND USES

The rhizomes are acrid, bitter, thermogenic, intensely poisonous, abortifacient, depurative, anthelminthic, digestive, stomachic, purgative, emetic, gastrointestinal irritant, antipyretic, alexeteric, expectorant, rejuvenating and tonic. They are useful in inflammations, ulcers, scrofula, haemorrhoids, parasitic skin diseases, leprosy, pruritis, dyspepsia, helminthiasis, flatulence, intermittent fevers and debility. It is useful in promoting labour pain and expulsion of the placenta. In large doses, it is highly poisonous and will cause vomiting, purging, gastrodynia and burning sensation.

In Ayurveda and Yunani systems of medicine it is a reputed medicine. According to Ayurveda, tuber is pungent, bitter, acrid, heating, anthemirtic, laxative, alexeteric, and useful in abdominal pains, itching and thirst.
     
                   
           

CULTIVATION AND PROPAGATION

SOIL AND CLIMATE

It grows well in red sandy loam soil having PH 5.5 to 7 with good drainage. Crop requires hot and humid climate. It can be grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions upto 2400m.

 

NURSERY RAISING AND PLANTING

Propagated by seeds and tubers but it is best raised from tubers. Tubers are planted in the bed during rainy season, maintaining 60 x 60cm. spacing. Plant requires support, as it is a climber. Approximately 41,500 tubers are required as planting material for one hectare of land.

 

WEEDING AND THINNING

During dry period, the crop is irrigated at 7-15 days interval depending on the requirement. Though the weekly irrigation is preferable, fortnight interval is compulsory. Drip irrigation is not ideal as it induces too much of vegetative growth.
     
                   
           

WEEDING AND PRUNING

Periodical weeding and hoeing is required in nursery and field.

HARVESTING/POST HARVESTING OPERATION

The fruits are harvested after 170-180 days of planting and dried in shade for 10-15 days. The tubers are harvested after 5-6 years of transplantation. It is cut into small pieces and dried in shade.

New alkaloid, O2-demethyl-N-formyldeacetylcolchisine, N-formyldeacetyl-beta-lumicolchisine, O2-demethyl-N-formyldeacetyl-beta-lumicolchisine and others isolated. Luteolin, colchisine and glucoside of 3-demethyl colchisine and Luteolin isolated from flowers, beta-sitosterol and its glucoside and 2-hydroxy-6-methoxybenzoic acids from rhizomes.


ACTIVE CONSTITUENTS

Colchicine increased basal release of growth hormones in rats. In the case of malignant human gliomas colchisine effect was studied.
     

           

YIELD
     
250-300 kg seeds per hectare annually and 2.5-3 ton/hectare tuberous roots five years after transplantation.

      
HOME REMEDY

For expelling placenta, paste of root should be applied to palm and sole of the women.

125-250 g of purified drug.
