Chemical structure of Andrographolide

Are the KaLmegh and Chirayta SAME?

Both are different plants and both have different medicinal values.  There is also great difference in the rate of both plants. The Chirayata is ten time costlier then Kalmegh .

Till now the Kalmegh is sourced from the forest. This is found in large quantity naturally in the forest of Jharkhand, Bihar, M.P. Just because of its increasing demand the commercial cultivation has started on large leval in different part of the country. The cultivation is very simple

Kalmegh is found naturally in the humid and hot places, some time it is also available in dry forest. For the cultivation point of view tropical climate is good for it. It can be cultivated in whole India except the cold region.

Kalmegh is a hard plant it can be grown in all the type of normal soil. It shows good growth specially in light black soil, sandy loam soil with rich organic content. The soil which are favourable for growth of Chilli and Cotton, are good for Kalmegh. For the good production point of view water loging should not be in the farm. The pH of soil must be in the range of 6.5 -8.5.

Kalmegh can be cultivated by the genetic method (seeds) as well as vegetative method (layering/ Cutting). For the commercial point of view the genetic propagation is good. It is also easy to propagate by seeds. The nursery can be raised for the better result and germination percentage.

( i ) Direct Plantation :-

Some time farmer broadcasts the seeds in the field. The germination percentage will be good by this way but there will be problem of the weed in the farm. In initial stage the growth of the plant is slow. The weeds also start to dominate the main crop. It will increase the cost of cultivation and the growth of the plant will be also affected. For the commercial point of view nursery raising is better than direct seedling.

( II ) Nursery Raising :-

Plantation of the Kalmegh is more effective by nursery raising. This is also cost effective. This is also more successful method. The nursery is prepares in first week of the month of May. For the plantation in one acre, 100 square feet nursery is sufficient.  Keep in mind that width of the nursery should be less length can be more because at the time of weeding the person can uproot the weed without entering in the bed. A person can be easily do the weeding by sitting on the border of the bed. The bed must be at the height of 9-12 inch from the ground level.

To prepare the nursery first of all clean the farm. Mix the 100 Kg organic manure in the soil. After the manuring do a light irrigation of the bed. Now take the 500 gm seeds of the Kalmegh mix them in 3 Kg sandy soil and broadcast it in the bed. After the broadcasting, put a thin layer of the organic manure and soil mixture.  Cover it with a mulching of the crop residual.

To protect the seedling from direct sunlight a shed can be constructed on the nursery. Give light irrigation after every 3-4 days with the help of sprinkler.  For the best germination percentage keep in the mind that the seed should not be older than 8 months.

The seeds start to germinate after 7-8 days meanwhile the weeding can be done as per requirement. The time of transplanting from nursery to the field is 50 days old plant. At that time the height of the plant will be 7-8 c.m.

FieLd Preparation FOR THE KALMEGH:-

At the time of nursery raising the field preparation should also be started. First of all the weeds must be removed by 2-3 deep ploughing. After the ploughing mix the 5 Ton Organic Manure/Acre. The manure should be mixed properly. After the mixing of the manure level the filed with the help of leveller. Before levelling please do a light ploughing by the cultivator.

The healthy plants raised in the nursery can be transplanted in the well prepared field.  Before transplanting seedling should be treated with the Trichodrama and Azactobactor. The pre-planting treatment will help the plant to resistant with pest and disease. The natural showers are good at the time of transplanting. If it is not happening the flood irrigation can be done in the field. After that irrigation the plant should be transplanted in the pits dug by the Khurpi. The spacing of planting is Plant to Plant 1 Feet and Line to line 1 Feet.

Time is an important factor for the transplanting of the seedlings. The plant must be transplanted before 15th July. It is noticed that there will be poor growth if the plants are transplanted after the 15th August .

Weed Control In the CROP:-

There is possibility of the huge weeds infection as the planting is done during Mansoon. If the weeds are not controlled properly it can affect the growth of the plant. The pre emergence weedicides can be used. The manual weeding can be done after the interval of the 20-25 days. After the two manual weeding the field will free from weed infection.

There is no need of extra irrigation as the crop is transplanted in the season of Monsoon. If it is not raining on the time the field can be irrigated at the interval of 20-20 days  as per the requirement of the soil

If the 5 Ton organic manure is mixed at the time of field preparation there will be no need of the extra fertilizer in the crop. Generally the crop remain insect and pest free as the test of the crop is bitter. There is less chances of loss by insects, stray animals and birds.

Maturity of the crop

After the 2.5 - 3 months of transplanting the crops start flowering, which are light white in colour. The pods start to form like the pod of rice plant. Slowly and slowly the pods start to mature. This is best indication to uproot the plant. The leaves of plant start dropping from top and the biomass remain same at the lower side of the plant. This is indication of harvesting. Generally this situation comes in the month of October and November.  The plant is dried after the uprooting.

If the farmer is interested in seed collection the farmer can wait for one to two months. When most of pods mature fully in the month of January and Feburuary  in this type farmer will get less leaves but he will get the income from the seeds.

Normally 10 quintals dry biomass can be obtained from the 1 acre crop. In the case multi cutting the farmer can get the 15 Quintals biomass from one acre.
