The cultivation of medicinal plants is not only ecologically safe but also beneficial. They can be annual or perennial; woody or herbaceous; sun loving or shade requiring. Cultivation of medicinal plants especially high-value medicinal plants is creating new dimensions in the field of agriculture. The medicinal plants’ industry puts together the various facets of this multi-disciplinary industry and its global interest. Capital investment in the cultivation of medicinal plants is very less in comparison to that in traditional farming. It is also more beneficial, about four to five times, than traditional farming. Medicinal plants and their use to cure ailments are a part and parcel of the traditional Indian system of medicine dating back to thousand of years. The marketing of medicinal plants is also expanding and if we tie up with big companies, then marketing is not a problem. Besides the cultivation of single species of plants, the farmers grow a combination of trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers for optimum productivity.
